Romania is a recovering former communist country bordered by the Black Sea, Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Ukraine, and Moldova.
It has a population of approximately 23 million people with an unusually high percentage of orphans. There are approximately 80,000 children and youth living in orphanages and foster homes, that provide minimal skill training or preparation prior to releasing the youth into the world.
There are many different kinds of orphanages or “children’s homes” in Romania including: specialized facilities for children of convicts; children touched by tuberculosis; children with special needs; infants who have been abandoned at birth.
